Shelly King (born 25 September 1955) is an actress known for playing Jay Harper in Angels (TV series) and Yasmeen Nazir in the soap opera Coronation Street.

Early life

King was born in Calcutta, India in 1955 to Kelly King, a much respected photographer in India and the UK. King attended La Martinere for Girls and learnt English and French but not the languages of her birth.[2] On 18 April 2018 during an interview on ITV's This Morning King opened up about being a gay woman and discussed her own struggles and difficulties which she had with her own sexuality.[3]

Coronation Street

Yasmeen Nazir, played by Shelley King, made her first on-screen appearance on 4 July 2014. The character and King's casting was announced on 15 May 2014.[4] Yasmeen is established character Kal Nazir's (Jimi Mistry) mother and the wife of Sharif Nazir (Marc Anwar).[4] The Nazirs will form the show's first Muslim family. Yasmeen runs the Community Centre on Victoria Street.
