Shantanu Bhowmik

Shantanu Bhowmik (born 1968) is a professor of aerospace engineering.[1] He is head of research and projects at School of Engineering, Amrita University. He established the International Centre for Nano Technology and Applied Adhesion at Sikkim Manipal University.[2][3]

Career

He has served in capacity of senior scientist at Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, Delft University of Technology. He is a recipient of multiple technology awards including NSERC Visiting Fellow and NASA's Vision of Space exploration from National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.[4]

His focus of work is around Aerospace engineering, Polymer nanocomposite and Adhesive bonding. He holds 3 disclosed patents. He is attributed with invention of Thermoplastic Carbon Fabric based lightweight Bulletproof vest.[5][6][7] The vest is estimated to be less than 10 times in weight, can withstand up to 57 °C (135 °F) temperatures and can be manufactured at a fraction of the current cost. It is projected to save the Indian Army an estimated 20,000 crore (US$2.8 billion) annually.[8]

He is on the editorial board of scientific journals including Journal of Aircraft and Spacecraft Science, International Journal of Surface Engineering and Materials Technology and Journal of New Dimensions of Science and Technology and is a reviewer for multiple others.[2][3]

He has co-authored multiple technical publications and books.[9][10][11]
