Shane Patrick Hughes (born 7 June 1996), best known by his stage name Shane Eagle, is a South African rapper. He is best known for making it as one of the top four contestants on South African television show Vuzu: The Hustle.[1]

Early life

Shane Patrick Hughes was born in Rabie Ridge, Johannesburg on 7 June 1996 to a father of Irish descent and a Coloured mother. His parents divorced when he was five years old. After the divorce, he went to live with his father in Kempton Park, Gauteng, attending predominantly white schools. However, he continued to visit his mother who still resided in Rabie Ridge, Johannesburg on a regular basis. The term "Eagle" originated from a group of his friends that resided in Rabie Ridge, Johannesburg and thus adopted it as a part of his stage name[2].

Music career

Shane recorded his first song at the age of 13 at his friend's studio who eventually saw potential in him.[3] Shortly after completing high school, he entered Vuzu: The Hustle, a South African television show and rap contest. Among the judges were influential South African rappers AKA, Tumi and motswako rapper Khuli Chana. Shane had a rough start in the competition, which was broadcast to South African audiences, but eventually made it to the Top 4, and was eliminated at Number 3.[4]

Shane was one of the local opening acts for J. Cole for the "J.Cole Live in Concert: Castle Lite Unlocks" concert.[5]

Shane's debut single, which features fellow contestant and eventual winner Big Star Johnson, was released on 8 October 2015. The single performed well on radio stations YFM, 5FM and Highveld 947.[6] Shane was featured on DJ Switch's single "Now or Never", alongside Kwesta, Proverb and Reason, which was produced by Ganja Beatz.[7] Shane left JR's record label on good terms with him, less than a year after signing to him. AKA and JR have mentored Shane since he became a runner-up on Vuzu: The Hustle, and is still in contact with JR. Shane released his follow-up single "I'm Back" on his own record label Eagle Entertainment on 27 May 2016.[8]

Shane's music video for the single "Cutting Corners" premiered on Channel O on 9 September 2016.

The rapper announced on his Instagram that his debut album "Yellow" will be released on 31 August 2017.[9] He released music videos for "Let It Flow" and "Need Me ft. KLY" on 31 August 2017 when the album was available iTunes and Google Play, and streamed on Spotify and Deezer. He expressed his desire for the album to reach gold status by selling 20 000 copies of his album. He further added that the album had a bonus track titled "75" that would be available only on the hard copies. Following his announcement, he started the movement #20KOutTheTrunk. He is currently selling physical hard copies of the album, signed and handed to you by himself, at various locations across South Africa
