"Shallow" is a song from the 2018 film A Star Is Born, performed by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. The song served as the first single from the film's soundtrack and was released on September 27, 2018 by Interscope Records. "Shallow" was written by Gaga with Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, and Andrew Wyatt, and produced by her with Benjamin Rice.

Background and composition

For developing the soundtrack of A Star Is Born, Gaga collaborated again with Mark Ronson with whom she had produced her fifth studio album, Joanne (2016).[1] Among the first draft of songs, one was called "Shallow" written by Gaga and Ronson with Dirty Pretty Things' Anthony Rossomando and Miike Snow's Andrew Wyatt.[2] When Lukas Nelson came onboard during the development of the soundtrack, "Shallow" also evolved into a different sounding track. Nelson put his own band, Promise of the Real, as Bradley Cooper's character Jackson Maine's band. He also added a small acoustic guitar intro, inspired by Eric Clapton, feeling it would contrast with Gaga's loud belting which followed later in the song. Gaga came to EastWest Studio to help Nelson with the track and also directed the band. Some of the instrumentation like "The moments, the crashes of the cymbal, we did that live in the studio based on the vision that we had," Nelson recalled.[1]

"Shallow" was used in the film during a sequence when Jackson strides onto the stage at Greek Theater in Los Angeles and sings the opening verses. Jackson had already told Gaga's character Ally that he would be debuting a song they wrote together. For the second verse Ally musters up courage and goes onstage to sing "Shallow", including belting the loud chorus to the big audience.[3] For filming the sequence with "Shallow", Cooper filled the Greek Theater with around 2,000 Gaga fans and then recorded it. Following the filming, Gaga entertained the crowd playing piano version of her old songs; Promise of the Real also sang at the venue.[1]

Gaga described "Shallow" as a pivotal moment in A Star Is Born, since it spoke about Ally and Jackson's conversations and their "need and drive" to go deep and move away from the shallow area in their relationship.[4] With DJ Zane Lowe's Beats 1 radio show, the singer explained that they wrote the track "from the point of view of Ally, it becomes part of the reason they fall in love. When I was writing music for the film I had to think about Ally as if she wasn't me. I went with a sound for her, even in the pop realm, that's unlike anything I've ever put out before."[5] A slow-burning ballad, "Shallow" features instrumentation from acoustic guitar and piano with Cooper and Gaga trading verses. It gradually moves towards the final chorus with a vocal run, described by Jon Blistein of Rolling Stone as "chilling" and "impressive harmonizing" from both artists.[4] The song is performed in the key of G major with a moderate tempo of 96 beats per minute in common time. It follows a chord progression of Em7–D/F–G5–C–G5–D, and the vocals span from G3 to D5.[6]

Critical response

Brian Truitt of USA Today wrote, "It's a catchy and dramatic song that not only might snag an original song Oscar nomination – honestly, the movie will have quite a few tunes for the Academy's consideration – but also could be an unavoidable hit and a new favorite at karaoke bars everywhere."[2] Eve Barlow of Pitchfork commended Gaga's performance, noting the theme "may prove to be Gaga's own apex in the spotlight, her completion into superstar of charts and screen."[7]

Chart performance

In the United States, "Shallow" debuted at number 14 on the Billboard Digital Songs chart, with 12,000 copies sold according to Nielsen SoundScan. This was only half a day of sales, since the song was released towards the end of the tracking week.[8] The following week, "Shallow" topped the Digital Songs chart selling 58,000 copies (Gaga's sixth chart-topper) and consequently entered at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. The placement was also aided by the song acquiring 8.3 million streams.[9] "Shallow" also reached number one on the Canadian Digital Songs chart, becoming Gaga's fifth leader and first since "Born This Way" (2011).[10] It consecutively opened at number 16 on the Canadian Hot 100.[11]

In Australia, "Shallow" debuted at number 25 on the ARIA Singles Chart.[12] The song entered at number 13 on the UK Singles Chart with 20,425 units according to the Official Charts Company,[13] and has since reached number six in the United Kingdom.[14] It elsewhere has topped the charts in Ireland, giving Gaga her sixth number-one in the country and Cooper his first.[15]
