Shadeene Evans

Shadeene "Shay" Evans is an Australian soccer player.

Early life

Evans was born and grew up in Borroloola, Northern Territory, Australia. John Kundereri Moriarty introduced her to soccer when she was 9 years old, with a program which he had been running since 2012.[1] In 2014, Moriarty took Evans, along with other Indigenous kids, to Brazil to see the FIFA World Cup.[2]

Football career

In August 2015, Evans moved to New South Wales, and was enrolled at Westfields Sports High School, which is located 3000 kilometers from Borroloola. "I miss family, going out bush and hunting and camping. It's bush, scrub and rivers, and we sleep outside with tents and a fire. It's really small, a really remote community, and there's not many people. But there's a lot of soccer," she says.[2] She was coached by Alen Stajcic, the head coach of the Australia women's national soccer team. In addition to training at school, she also became a part of the NSW Institute of Sport.[3][2][4]

In 2018, Evans was named in the Young Matildas, along with ten other footballers in the Football NSW Institute, for a week long training camp beginning on 11 March, preceding a match against Thailand on 16 March.[5]
