Season summary

The summer of 1987 brought notable players in Italian championship: Vincenzo Scifo (for Internazionale), Ian Rush (Juventus), Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten (Milan).[1] Napoli started better than rivals, leading the group after five matches.[2] Inter and Juventus, en fact, had several issues.[3]

Reigning champions retained top-place in autumn and winter,[4][5] not meeting obstacles.[6] In spring times Napoli, however, got a slower step:[7] it was useful to help Milan's comeback, with Rossoneri able to recover a good amount of points.[8] Head-to-head match, played on 1 May 1988, smiled to Northern side that reported a 3–2 win.[9] Milan then got just two points but – for his chance – Napoli resulted worse losing both matches.[10] It led to Milan's 12th title and its first since 1979.[11] This season was the last with 16 teams playing, as two relegations and four promotions from Serie B caused, starting 1988–89, the presence of 18 clubs.
