Seomra Spraoi

Seomra Spraoi (English: Play Room) was an autonomous social centre in Dublin, Ireland which first opened in 2004 and closed in 2015, .[1] some of the former members came together and renamed it Jigsaw and developed it as a gig space[2]. Seomra Spraoi was run by an anti-capitalist commune along autonomous principles.[3]

Seomra Spraoi was formerly located at Ormond Quay,[4] then Mary's Abbey, and from 2004 - 2015 situated at 10 Belvedere Court, behind Mountjoy Square and off Gardiner Street Upper, in Dublin's north inner city.

Seomra Spraoi hosted a number of regular events over the years, such as :

  • Bicycle workshop
  • Vegan cafe
  • Open cinema (movies for homeless people who can't afford to go to the cinema)
  • Spanish language classes
  • Practical squatter nights (learn how to squat)
  • Chess club
  • Open collective meetings

A number of collectives used the space for meetings and activities, including:

  • Abortion Rights Campaign
  • Anti Racism Network
  • Choice Ireland
  • Dolphin's Barn Community Garden
  • Fracking Free Ireland
  • Gluaiseacht
  • Indymedia
  • Queer Thing
  • Revolutionary Anarcha-Feminist Group (RAG)
  • Shell to Sea
  • Workers Solidarity Movement


In February 2011 the project hosted a public talk by Philip Nitschke, founder and director of the pro-euthanasia group Exit International, after several other venues cancelled on short notice due to pressure from small right-wing Christian groups.[5]
