Senam Okudzeto

Senam Okudzeto (born 1972) is an American and British artist and educator who lives and works in Basel, London, Ghana and New York City.[1]

Life and work

Okudzeto was born in Chicago,[1] grew up in Ghana and Nigeria, and received a bachelor's degree from the Slade School of Fine Art in 1995 and a master's degree from the Royal College of Art in 1997. Okudzeto continued with post-graduate studies in the independent study program at the Whitney Museum of American Art.[2]

Although primarily a painter, Okudzeto works in a range of media, including film and text. Her work explores global connectivity, modernity, and the relationships between Africa, the diasporas, and the rest of the world.[3]

She has been artist in residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Stiftung Laurence Haus in Basel. She has taught at Loyola University, Occidental College and the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Switzerland. She was a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study from 2003 to 2004.[2][4]

Okudzeto has exhibited internationally,[2] and solo exhibitions of her work have been mounted at Kunstraum Lakeside, Klagenfurt, Austria, and P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center.[3] Her work is included in the collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art[5][6] and the Amistad Research Center.[7]

She received a Pollock-Krasner Award in 2002[2] and was awarded the Rome Prize in 2015.[8]
