Plot summary

Detectives Logan and Falacci investigate the murder of OB/GYN Zach Rush in his office at the practice he shares with his brother Eli. Blood stains at the crime scene have been bleached. Zach's body was posed like a woman giving birth; because Zach performed abortions for patients of the practice, the detectives suspect a pro-life motive. But Zach was unknown to activists. The detectives question a man who is upset that his wife got an abortion from Zach, but he has an alibi. Logan and Falacci investigate Zach's delinquent teenage son and Zach's wife, who was having an affair with Eli.

DNA analysis of the underside of the bleached bloodstain determines the blood is that of Eli's biological son, and the detectives learn that Eli was a sperm donor. In addition, Falacci deduces that Eli used his own sperm to impregnate many of the practice's patients. Tom Pittino, the Rushes' genetic counselor, is the murderer and Eli's son. Tom's younger brother Ralph is also Eli's son. Ralph is sick and needs a bone marrow transplant, which led Tom to track Eli down. Eli is a perfect match, but refused to save Ralph's life. When Zach told Tom that Eli would never be a father to him and that Tom would never be part of the family, Tom "snapped" and killed Zach. Eli staged Zach's body and bleached the blood, fearing the real facts of the case would expose his many indiscretions. The detectives, sympathetic to Tom's crime of passion and disgusted by Eli, reach an agreement with Tom that his testimony, without which Eli is considered the prime suspect, will only be recorded if Eli donates the marrow to save Ralph's life; Eli begrudgingly agrees.
