Sebastião is a Portuguese male given name,[1] descending from the Latin Sebastianus [2] and equivalent to the English name Sebastian.

Originally it was a Title given a band of soldiers charged with the guarding of Herod The Great, This troop was sent to aid Julius Ceasar who was besieged in Alexandria by Egyptian forces loyal to Pharoh the co-ruler of Egypt with Cleopatra. It was this rescue which promted Ceasar his Title of Sebaste or the revered ones on them.

From this point 'the men of sebaste' became an integrated part of Roman forces stationed in the Levant as auxiliaries.
