Scott Sterling (fictional)

Scott Sterling is a fictional sports personality, known for his key roles in multiple internet viral videos. Sterling is played by Matt Meese, who is the lead writer and an actor for the BYUtv family comedy television program Studio C.[1]

Sterling first appeared on Studio C in November 2014 as a soccer goalkeeper for Yale[2] who (inadvertently) blocks five penalty kicks with his face (one of which happens to deflect off the crossbar and into his face) during the final shootout.[3] His efforts help lead Yale to victory against North Carolina to claim the NCAA Division I national title in the Final of the College Cup, and additionally, he is dubbed "The Man, The Myth, The Legend" by commentators before being carried off on a "Stretcher of Glory" by his Bulldog teammates. The original soccer video went viral, attracting 10 million views on YouTube in 10 days and 20 million views in the first few months after release.[4][5] It has now amassed 60 million views as of June 2018.

In a video released in March 2016, Sterling joins Yale once again as captain of the volleyball team (although, ironically, Yale only maintains a non-NCAA club men's volleyball team in reality). In this video, he (once again) inadvertently blocks volleyballs with his face, again leading Yale to victory in the NCAA Division I National Championships– and again against North Carolina. This clip reached over 1 million views in less than 24 hours.[6][7][8]

The soccer sketch and the volleyball sketch are, by far, the two most viewed videos on Studio C's YouTube channel, with 60 million and 34 million views, respectively. Scott Sterling has appeared in a total of six videos.
