Science Advances is a peer-reviewed multidisciplinary open-access scientific journal established in early 2015. It is the fourth journal published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the first that is gold open access and online only.[1] The journal's scope includes all areas of science, including the life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, computer sciences, and environmental sciences.

History

The creation of Science Advances was announced in February 2014, and the journal published its first articles in early 2015.[2] In mid 2018, the journal was issued one of the highest initial journal impact factors for any open access journal. Over the first three years of its life, Science Advances received nearly 12,000 submissions, of which it published close to 2000, for an overall acceptance rate of around 17%.

Editorial structure

Editorial decisions at Science Advances are made by the Editorial Board, which is composed entirely of working scientists, with input from external peer reviewers. The board is divided into editorial groups, each of which is led by a Deputy Editor and composed of a group of Associate Editors. Science Advances is the only journal published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science in which all editorial decisions are made by scientists. The Editorial Board is supported by a full-time professional staff.

Open access policies

The journal publishes all articles by default under the non-commercial Creative Commons license (CC-BY-NC), and allows authors to pay an additional fee to enable commercial reuse. When the journal was launched, this policy was initially criticized by open access advocates, who preferred the less restrictive CC-BY license.[3]
