The School of Science and Technology, Singapore (SST) is a specialised independent secondary school in Singapore, established in 2010.[1] It offers a four-year applied-learning curriculum [2][3][4] which leads to the Singapore-Cambridge GCE O Level examination. The school uses the Direct School Admissions (DSA) Exercise to obtain its cohorts with the application including a selection camp and several academic tests.[5] The institution is currently one of the eight schools in the FutureSchools@Singapore project.[6][7]

History

The School of Science and Technology, Singapore was set up with assistance from Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP).[6]

The institution was first announced in Parliament by Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam in March 2008, that a new specialised independent school with an emphasis on applied learning will be set up.[8][9] The inaugural SST Board of Directors meeting was on 3 March 2009 and was followed by the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) and SST.[10][11][12][13]

SST was officially declared open by Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam on 13 April 2013.[14]

Curriculum

Initial admission to the SST is done via the Direct School Admission (DSA) which includes interviews, General Ability Tests (GAT), Comprehension Reasoning Tests (CRT) and selection camps. The school admits 200 students in the Secondary 1 cohort and up to 50 students at the Secondary 3 level each year. Extra slots are filled in by the Secondary 1 Posting for those who did not make it for the DSA Selected Posting.

A core part of the SST curriculum and learning experience is the focus on applied and interdisciplinary learning.SST seeks to broaden student's learning by cross-linking its scientific curriculum with other disciplines, allowing students to improve the world with the application of scientific knowledge, understanding the implications of scientific solutions and inventions including their effects on society. There are many partnership programs, many of which are held in conjunction with tertiary institutions such as Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Nanyang Technological University & Singapore University of Technology and Design

Secondary 1 and 2 students take regular subjects, such as English, Mother Tongue Language, Mathematics,[15] plus Information Communication Technology (ICT), Innovation & Entrepreneurship (I&E) and Art, Design, Media & Technology (ADMT).

At Secondary 3 and 4, students continue the focus on applications with applied subjects such as Electronics, Computing, Design Studies and Biotechnology. These subjects are held together in conjunction with Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

All lower secondary students are required to take Interdisciplinary Research Studies (IRS) as well, which merges with Science in the first semester of Sec 2 to form ISS (Investigative Skills in Science).[16]

Facilities

SST was temporarily housed at 5 Clementi Avenue 6, for two years. The site was retrofitted with design studios, laboratories, places for collaboration and discussion, and a work display area. Certain facilities (e.g. laboratories) at Ngee Ann Polytechnic were also available for students' use.[17] SST moved into its current campus, which is located at 1 Technology Drive, near Dover MRT Station and Singapore Polytechnic in January 2012.[17] SST's new campus comprises four blocks, three of which form the main building on one side of the campus and the Ngee Ann Kongsi Sports Complex on the other side of the field. The new campus's facilities include an "Info Hub" (Library), design and media studios, a 400-seat auditorium, as well as many specialised laboratories and classrooms.[18]

Laboratories

The laboratories and specialised classrooms in SST consist of 12 laboratories, with 4 laboratories dedicated to the Applied Sciences, a tissue culture room, a research laboratory and an engineering laboratory. In the Physics laboratories, the unique multifunctional NAWIS® system is utilised to allow for more flexibility and mobility in these spaces.

The Beta Lab is a classroom concept of what a future classroom should be like and currently, it is adopted by tertiary institutions in Singapore. The Beta Lab facilitates collaboration and small group discussions due to the integration of technology within its layout.

The SST Maker Lab is a fully equipped learning zone where students can design, prototype and manufacture products. Although fairly new, such "Makerspaces" are starting to make waves in the field of education. The SST Maker Lab represents the democratisation of design, engineering, fabrication and education, and SST aims to empower their students with the resources needed to unleash their creativity.

A unique space for aspiring entrepreneurs, SST INC HQ is a state-of-the-art business incubator which hosts start-up companies run by the Information and Communications Technology Talent Development Programme (ICT TDP) students. Computer workshops, exhibitions and project discussions are held here on a regular basis, and the venue has been the nerve centre for project discussions.

Teaching

To facilitate teaching, SST has many different facilities meant for teachers and students. These facilities include air-conditioned classrooms with electronic lockers, a 100-seat Lecture Theatre, a 100-seat Seminar Room, a 400-seat air-conditioned auditorium, an Art, Design, Media And Technology (ADMT) Studio and several Multi-Purpose Rooms.

SST is also one of the early adopters of the Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (Next Gen NBM), Singapore’s all-fibre ultra-high-speed broadband network.

Ngee Ann Kongsi Sports Complex

The Ngee Ann Kongsi Sports Complex consists of a multi-purpose hall, an indoor sports hall, gym, dance studio, music room and a rooftop basketball court. Outdoor sports facilities include a synthetic football field and a NAPFA fitness area, in addition to three CCA rooms, 2 student leader lounges, and Our Space@SST, which is an open concept space for student project collaboration.
