The Saraperos de Saltillo (English: Saltillo Serape Wearers) is a Triple-A Minor League Baseball team which plays in the Mexican League. They have won three championships (1980, 2009, and 2010). Their home ballpark is the Estadio de Béisbol Francisco I. Madero in Saltillo, Coahuila. The 1979 Saraperos were recognized as one of the 100 greatest minor league teams of all time.^[1]

History

The Saraperos arrived in the Mexican League in 1970. They originated at a dinner held by the members of the Committee for Construction of the Cathedral of Saltillo, whose president was Don Jorge Torres Casso. The meeting began by requesting data on the cost of the franchise, for player purchase and other details required for those wishing to start an interesting adventure in the king of sports.

With the support of the Governor and the Mayor of Saltillo, joined the first directive of Saraperos with Don Jorge Torres Casso as president, Mr. Flavio Trevino, Javier López del Bosque and Gustavo Lara Ramos as vice-presidents; Eleazar Galindo, Flores Valdez Eustolio treasurer and as secretary.

It was in 1999 that started the new era in the history of the Green Club to be acquired by the organization Act, the longest-running Mexican baseball after more than four decades of promoting the sport operating in Culiacan Tomateros Mexican Pacific League.

The Saraperos have been the most successful club in the 1999-2005 phase of the Mexican League, being the leader in health club league level and standing to qualify for the playoffs in every one of the 7 seasons carried out in that period, playing exciting postseason series.

They were the two-time champions of the Northern Zone, titles won in 2004 and 2005.

In these past seven seasons, the Saraperos' performances have had renowned players such as Luis Ayala, the extraordinary Mexican pitcher who after shining with the Green Team made it to the majors with the Montreal Expos, now the Washington Nationals. He was champion in 1980, 2009 and 2010, runner-up in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1988, 2004 and 2005. His first appointment was that of shortstop Guadalupe Chavez, from the Monterrey Sultans in late 1969, he, during his career with Saraperos used the number 15 was retired in 1985 Saraperos.

In late 1998 the employer Sinaloa Juan Manuel Act to purchase the franchise Hair Javier Siller Saltillo, starting a stunning renovation that consisted mainly of remodeling the Estadio Francisco I. Since then Saraperos been rated 12 times in a row to play-off.

Stadium

The Estadio de Béisbol Francisco I. Madero, is a baseball stadium that is part of the Ciudad Deportiva Francisco I. Madero in Saltillo, Coahuila, was built in 1964 and is located on the corner of Boulevard Jesus Valdez Sanchez Nazario Ortiz Garza Blvd, east of the city. Over the years, the stadium has undergone several changes including the expansion of its seating capacity from 7,500 to its current 16,000 in late 1998. Prior to the 2011 season, about $87 billion, funded by the State Government of Coahuila and the team, were invested to renovate the stadium.

The Mexican League All-Star Game was held at the stadium in 1986, 2002, and 2011. The 2002 event was an international match between the teams of Mexico and Cuba.
