Sarah Reng Ochekpe is a Nigerian Politician from Plateau State.

Early life and education

Ochekpe was born on the October 4, 1961 to the family of Ali Reng Madugben in Foron, a district of Barikin Ladi Local government area of Plateau State. She had her first degree in Political Science from Ahmadu Bello University, then a master's degree in Public Administration from University of Jos. She also has post graduate qualifications from Aberdeen College of Commerce and Nigerian Institute of Journalism.[1][2]

Career

Ochekpe started her career as a clerical assistant in 1979 at Radio Plateau Jos. She completed her National Youth Service at Gummi in Zamfara State where she served as a secondary school teacher between 1983 and 1984. She returned to plateau state after her NYSC and worked in Foron as an Education Officer GradeVII from 1985 to 1986. She got married in 1986 and moved with her husband to Aberdeen in the United Kingdom as he pursed his Ph.D. While in Aberdeen, She served as a part time administrative assistant at Powis Community Education centre and was a member and in the management of the Foreign Women Committee. On her return to Nigeria in 1989, she worked as Principal Social Mobilisation Officer/Head of Section Family and Social Relation at MAMSER till 1991. In 1991 she was appointed the Head of Administration, then Acting Director and in 1993 she became the state director of the National Orientation Agency (Nigeria) (NOA) Plateau State till 2001. She was promoted to the NOA headquarters in Abuja where she served as the Executive Director Administration and Finance from 2001 to 2004. [1] She went on secondment in 2004 to become the State Adviser Plateau State Universal Basic Education Project Nigeria. This was a project funded by the World bank/ DFID and managed by the British Council.She worked on this project for 2 years and assisted the State Ministry of Education and Project team in Plateau State to develop state UBE plans. In 2006 she served as Policy Adviser, Coalition of Civil Society on Education for all (CSACEFA) in Abuja. From 2007 to 2011, she was the Executive Chairman, Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board PSUBEB Her office was responsible for the recruitment, promotion and discipline of Education Secretaries and management staff at the board and the 17 local government education authorities in Plateau State. In 2011, she was appointed Federal Minister of Water Resources.


Personal life


She is married to Professor Nelson Ochekpe from Otukpo Local Government in Benue State. He is a professor on Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Jos.

Political career

Ochekpe occupied several directorial roles in National Orientation Agency (Nigeria), before her ministerial appointment.[1] During her time in government, she is noted to have increased the level of accessible water for Nigerians to 70%, and created and rehabilitated artificial waterways that reduced flooding and alleviated unemployment.[3][4][5] In 2017, she and two other persons were accused of money laundering and conspiracy worth ₦450 million.[6]
