Sampheng in Day-time

Sampheng (Thai: สำเพ็ง, pronounced [sǎm.pʰēŋ]) is a historic neighbourhood and market in Bangkok's Chinatown. It was settled during the establishment of the capital of Rattanakosin (today's Bangkok) in 1782 by the Teochew Chinese who had been relocated to make way for the Grand Palace. The community eventually grew into the surrounding areas. The original street of Sampheng, now officially known as Soi Wanit 1 (ซอยวานิช 1), is now a small alleyway lined with numerous shops, and is a famous market.

Operate time

Sampeng is considered to be a very large market in Bangkok. Sampeng is usually open for 24 hours[1] but also divided into two parts which are day-time and night-time.

Day-time

Usually open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.[1] Most of the shops in this market sell goods like fashion cloth or toys for children. Due to the small weight of goods during this time, they are easy to be transported without any trouble.[2] Most of the time, customers are person that purchase clothes and often purchase in a small amount. Most customers go to Sampeng during the weekend.

Night-time

During the night time, most shops are open from 11:00 PM but most customers come at 1:00 AM until 6:00 AM in the morning.[1] The goods that are selling during this time are the same as during the day-time but customers often buy goods in large amount due to fewer customers compared to day-time, so it is easier to transport by car drive straight into the market.

  • Gifts

Gifts are considered to be the most popular goods that are being sold in Sampeng. Gifts have a low production cost and can be sold almost the entire year.[3]

  • Fashion clothes

Sampeng has a considerably amount of shops that sell clothes such as shoes, fancy clothes, socks, watches, etc. The price of clothes is usually not as expensive as clothes that selling in department stores so it is common to see customers purchase lots of clothes from this market.[3]

  • Toys

Toys stores can be seen in every corner of Sampeng. The example of stuff in this category are dolls, toy robots, remote-controlled cars, etc. Most of the parents purchase the toys for their children as learning tools or just for their entertainment.[1]

  • Stationery

Pens, pencil, sharpener, eraser, scissors, stationery box, papers and most stationery items can also be found in Sampeng at a very low price.[1]

  • Miscellaneous

Many dried foods whether imported from other countries or made in Thailand are also popular foods in Sampeng. Calico with a variety of colors and patterns, and much more merchandise can be purchased he[1] re.
