Sambhaji Bhide

Sambhajirao' Bhide is a pro-Hindutva Maratha leader.

Sambhajirao did his MSc. in Physics from Savitribai Phule Pune University, and received a gold medal. He worked as a professor at Furgusson College in Pune.[1]

When he was a faculty member at Fergusson college he is reported to have been on the advisory boards of NASA and the Pentagon of USA.[2]

For some time, he worked full time with the RSS. Later, he formed his own organisation, Shiv Pratishthan Hindustan in the late 1980s. The organisation aimed to spread the teachings of Shivaji and his son Sambhaji.[1]

He has a number of followers in Sangli, Kolhapur and Satara.[1]In 2008, his followers ransacked movie halls showing the film, Jodha Akbar.[3]

He is said to be close to Narendra Modi. In 2014, before the Lok Sabha elections, Modi visited Sambhaji, and said during a rally, “Bhide guruji did not invite me here. I came here on his orders,[4][5][6] and that he was inspired by Sambhajirao .[7]

Every year Sambhajirao along with his followers goes to different forts of Maharashtra which has significant history. There are around 90,000 to 1 lac people attend this expedition. This is considered to be one the Main & important Activity of Shri Shiv Pratishthan. Many youngsters from Maharashtra have benefited from this activity as they have leaved behind some bad addictions, habits like Drinking alcohol, tobaco etc. Sambhajirao teaches the footsteps of Shri Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj & sambhaji Maharaj to the youth during this expedition. How this eminent kings lived their life with pride and honor.

In June 2018, Sambhajirao in a rally in Nashik claimed that eating the fruits of a mango tree from his orchard had helped couples conceive male children. An advisory committee under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) (PCPNDT) Act asked the Nashik Municipal Corporation to file a court case against him.[8][9]

Bhima Koregaon violence

On 2 January 2018, an FIR was filed against him and Milind Ekbote for inciting the 1 January 2018 violence on Dalits in Bhima Koregaon.[10]

Sambhajirao claimed that the roots of the violence lay in the Elgar Parishad of 31 December 2017. He demanded that leaders such as Prakash Ambedkar, who had spoken at the event be arrested.[11]

In August, a petition was filed before the Bombay High Court seeking his arrest for his role in the Bhima Koregaon violence.[10]
