Samantha Martel Johnson (born June 10, 1991)[1] is an American professional soccer defender who currently plays for National Women's Soccer League club Utah Royals FC.

College career

Johnson attended the University of Southern California between 2009 and 2012. In her final match for the USC Trojans, she scored the game-winning goal in a 2–1 win over rivals UCLA Bruins.[2][3]

Club career

Chicago Red Stars (NWSL) 2014–2018

In March 2014, Johnson joined Chicago Red Stars in the National Women's Soccer League for their preseason, after attending their 2014 Open Tryouts.[4] Johnson played 12 games and tallied one assist, before suffering from facial lacerations in a game against the Western New York Flash on June 18. This ended the rookie's season.[5]

In 2015 Johnson appeared in 14 games games for the Red Stars and in 2016 she appeared in 19 games. In 2017 she was the starting centre-back alongside Katie Naughton and appeared in 22 games.[6] Johnson was named to the team of the month for June 2017.[7]

On June 18, 2018, Johnson was traded to the Utah Royals FC.[8]

Loan to Sydney FC

In September 2014, it was announced that Johnson was to be loaned to Sydney FC in the W-League.[9]

Loan to Melbourne Victory

In October 2016, Johnson was loaned to Melbourne Victory for the 2016–17 W-League season.[10][11]

Utah Royals FC 2018–

After being acquired by the Utah Royals FC midseason, Johnson made her debut for the Royals on June 30 in a 3–1 win against Sky Blue FC, she started and played all 90 minutes at centre-back.[12]
