Salawat is a special Arabic phrase, which contains the salutation upon the prophet of Islam. This kind of phrase is usually expressed by Muslims in their five daily prayers (during the Tashahhud) and also when the name of Muhammad had been mentioned. "[1]

Etymology

  • Salawat is a plural form of salat (Arabic:صلاة) and from the root of the letters "sad, lam, waw" (Arabic ص.ل. و) which means "prayer, salutation, greeting and mercy". "[2]

Meaning

Arabic philologists hold the view that the meaning of the word salawat would vary according to who has used the word, and to whom it is used for. [3]

In Islamic context

  • When one says God sends salawat upon Muhammad, it means that He is sending blessings on him. [4]
  • When the creatures send salawat upon Muhammad, it means that they are asking for blessing. [5]
  • When Muhammad sends Salawat upon the believers, it indicates his prayer for their welfare, blessing and salvation. "[6]
  • When angels send salawat upon Muhammad, it means they implore God's blessing for him."[7]

Quran

  • God instructs Muslims to send blessing (salawat) on Muhammad as it was revealed in the Quran as thus: "Allah and His Angels send blessings on the Prophet, O you who believe! send your blessings on him, and salute him a thorough salutation".[8]

In hadiths

  • There was a hadith from Abu Amamah reports that Muhammad said: "Invoke more Salawat upon me on every Friday, the Salawat from my ummah (followers) is presented to me on every Friday. Whoever had invoked more Salawat upon me will be closest to me."[9]
  • Muhammad was also been reported saying: "The meanest person is he who does not invoke Salawat upon me when my name is mentioned in his presence"."[10]
  • Ibn Asakri has transmitted from al-Hasan bin Ali that Muhammad said: "Invoke more Salawat upon me, for your invocation is conducive to your sins being forgiven. And pray for me a high status and intercession, for surely my intercession will plead in your favour before Allah". "[11]
  • There was a narration from Ja'far al-Sadiq from Muhammad. He said: "All supplications to Allah will remain in a veil from the sky until a Salawat is sent to Mohammad and his Households". "[12]
  • In another tradition, Ja'far al-Sadiq was been quoted that: "whoever sends Salawat on Prophet and his households it means I am standing on the promise that I gave when Allah asked me, "Am I not your lord? And I answered yes you are". "[13]

According to various reports, the following salawat are recommended by Muhammad:

[lower-alpha 1]

O Allah, let Your Peace come upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as you have brought peace to Ibrahim and his family. Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as you have blessed Ibrahim and his family. Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.[14]

Muhammad was also reported to have said: "Do not invoke incomplete SALAWAT upon me". They (his companions) asked him: "What is incomplete SALAWAT?" He replied them: "When you say: O Allah! Send Your blessing to Muhammad and then stop on that. Rather say: اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ O Allah! Send Your blessing to (the prophet) Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad"."[15]
