Sagar caste

The Sagar, Shegar are a Hindu caste found in the state of Gujarat, Maharashtra in India.[1]

History and origin

Sagar Rajput were traditionally Rajput and farmer claimed higher status using British Administrative procedures. With new name and origin myth they claimed to be officially recognized as Shegar Rajputs.[2] The Sagar claim to be of the suryavanshi Kshatriya varna. They are one of a number of Rajput groups such as the Kathi found in Saurashtra, and are concentrated in the districts of Junagadh, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar, Amreli, and Rajkot. The Sagar speak the Kathiwari dialect of Gujarati.[3]

Present circumstances

The Sagar have three territorial divisions, the Sorathia, Gurjjar, and Mewari.There are connubial and commensal relations among the four divisions. The Sagar are further divided into clans called ataks, the main ones being Gohil, Solanki, Chauhan, Aajani, Parmar,Nanera, karena , Got,Gajnotar,Piprotar etc. They are a community of large to medium sized farmers, with many now beginning to migrate to the cities, and are in the process of getting urbanized.[4]

It's said that their ancestor have a very long record, the origin of this caste have a very near relation with the origin of the River Ganga in India.[5]
