Ryan Alexander Hawley (born 21 September 1985 in Dubai) is an English actor. He plays Robert Sugden in ITV's Emmerdale, becoming the fourth actor to take on the role in the series. He has received critical acclaim for his portrayal and has been nominated for several awards, including "Best Villain" and "Best Actor" at The British Soap Awards.[1]

Personal life

Hawley son of Christine and Steve spent his childhood partly in Sheffield and partly in the UAE due to his parents' work.[2] In school, Hawley took A-Level Media Studies and took part in school plays, subsequently realising his dream of becoming a film director was very difficult.[2]

Hawley went to university and trained to become an actor at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, England.[3]

Ryan also sings and plays the guitar.

Hawley married Daisy Prestes de Oliviera in 2013. They resided in Leeds.[4]

Career

Hawley's acting career began in 2007, when he began to appear in a number of TV series', films and stage productions.

Emmerdale

In 2014, Hawley was cast in his most prominent role as Robert Sugden on the ITV soap opera Emmerdale, becoming the fourth actor to portray the character. Since joining the soap, he has been involved in many high-profile storylines such as returning to the village with the White family, Robert's sexuality storyline leading to an affair, engagement and multiple break-ups with Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller), the manslaughter and cover-up of his characters ex-lover Katie Sugden (Sammy Winward), being shot by Ross Barton (Michael Parr) as part of a "Whodunnit?" and supporting Aaron after discovering he was sexually absued by his father Gordon Livesy (Gary Mavers) as a child.
