Ryan Omead Fowler (born May 20, 1982 in Redington Shores, Florida) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans and New York Jets. He played college football at Duke University.
Early years
Fowler attended Seminole High School before moving on to Duke University, where he became the first player to lead the team in tackles in all of his four seasons of eligibility. He was also a four-year starter (2 years at outside linebacker and 2 at middle linebacker).
Professional career
Dallas Cowboys
He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Dallas Cowboys in 2004. He spent most of his rookie season on the practice squad and was activated in two games. In 2005, he was a backup inside linebacker, appearing in 14 games (3 starts).
In 2006, he lost the battle for a starting linebacker spot against teammate Bradie James, but would lead the team in special teams tackles with 24.[1]
Tennessee Titans
As a restricted free agent, Fowler signed an offer sheet with the Tennessee Titans on March 12, 2007, with the Cowboys choosing not to match the Titans' offer.[2]
In 2007 he became the 6th starter at MLB for the Titans in as many years. He started 13 games before tearing his rotator cuff, labrum, biceps tendon, and suffered two avulsion fractures in his right shoulder on a 2nd quarter play on the frozen turf of the Kansas City Chiefs in December 2007. He finished the season with 88 tackles. In 2008 after a long rehabilitation from reconstruction surgery, Fowler became the first middle linebacker to be opening day starter two consecutive seasons since 2001. Despite that after 3 starts in the Titans first 3 games he was at or near the team lead in tackles and tackles for loss, on September 28, 2008, Fowler was benched by the Titans in favor of 2006 4th round draft pick, Stephen Tulloch.[3] Fowler was waived on September 5, 2009.[4]
New York Jets
Fowler was signed by the New York Jets on September 8, 2009, with the team releasing fullback Jason Davis to make room on the roster.[5] He was not re-signed at the end of the season.
