Ruth Berktold

Ruth Berktold (born 28 July 1967) is a German architect and professor at Munich University of Applied Sciences.[1] She is founder of YES architecture, an architecture bureau based in Munich and New York City.[2]

Biography

Berktold was born in Kaufbeuren, and studied architecture and urban planning at the University of Stuttgart and at the Städelschule Frankfurt under Peter Cooke and Enric Miralles (1986–1993). After her studies, she lived and worked in New York for nine years. There, she completed her Master of Science with disctinction in Advanced Architectural Design at Columbia University (1995) and then worked in different architectural offices like e.g. Bernard Tschumi, Ennead Architects, Polshek Partnership and Asymptote.[3] During this time, Berktold also started teaching. She co-taught a master studio with the Canadian architect Lise Anne Couture at the Parsons School of Design in New York. In 1999, she took up a professorship for architectural and product design at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy. In 2002, Berktold founded the architectural office YES architecture located in Munich and New York City.[2] From 2005 to 2008 she taught at NTNU Trondheim as a guest professor.[4]

Since 2017 Berktold is guest professor at the "Bernard & Anne Spitzer School of Architecture" in New York.[4] In 2017 she was president of the product design jury at the Cannes Lions Awards and in 2018 jury member of the D&AD awards.

Projects

In her multi-disciplinary projects Berkold deals with digital design and production methods. With her architectural office she realized over 300 projects in different countries. They include offices, museums, hotels, shopping malls and various public buildings.[5][6]

In 2004, Berktold was awarded the commission for the World Conference Center Bonn of the United Nations.[7]
