Russia Beyond, previously branded as Russia Beyond the Headlines or the RBTH, is a project/brand established by the TV-Novosti company owned by the Rossiya Segodnya which is a state news agency wholly owned and operated by the Russian government, created by an Executive Order of the President of Russia on December 9, 2013.^[1]^[2] It is multilingual news and information resource offering news, comment, opinion and analysis on culture, politics, business, science and public life in Russia.^[3] The "TV-Novosti" is an "autonomous non-profit organization" which also manages RT (Russia Today) TV channel. Russia Beyond operates 13 websites in 13 languages.

Other Names

On 5 September 2017, RBTH dropped the last two words of its full name, becoming Russia Beyond. The look and feel of the English edition was also refreshed substantially, removing all of things regarded distracting on screen when reading a story or watching a video.^[4]

History

Multilingual project Russia Beyond The Headlines was launched in 2007 by the Rossiyskaya Gazeta, Russian state newspaper of record. The first publisher of the project was deputy CEO of Rossiyskaya Gazeta Eugene Abov.

January 9, 2016, the RBTH project has become part of the "TV-Novosti" company with the preservation of its own brand.^[5] In 2017 the project dropped all printed versions.^[6]

Self-Identified Mission

Russia Beyond is a link between Russia and the world. It collects, selects and publishes in foreign languages topical reports about Russian politics, public life, culture, business, science, history and other areas that are usually not covered by foreign media for their domestic audiences.

Structure

Russia Beyond is managed by the non-profit organization "TV-Novosti" a daughter company of the Rossiya Segodnya.

The Russia Beyond editorial team consists of the Central Desk, which produces material shared across countries and regions, and of regional clusters, where this material is adapted to specific countries, adding themes relevant for a particular region. In addition, each regional division of Russia Beyond publishes material on bilateral relations with Russia.

Criticism

Russia Beyond has been criticized for being a para-governmental Russian propaganda organisation.^[7]
