Ruggero Franceschini

Ruggero Franceschini (Prignano sul Secchia, September 1, 1939) is an Italian Catholic archbishop.[1]

Biography

He entered as a young man in the Order of Friars Minor Cappuccini and was ordained a priest of this order on August 11, 1963.

On 2 July 1993, he was appointed apostolic vicar of Anatolia and at the same time Bishop of Sicilibba, North Africa. Receives the episcopal consecration on 3 October 1993 by Cardinal Achille Silvestrini (Prefect of the Congregation for Oriental Churches).

On October 11, 2004, was elevated as Catholic Archbishop of Smyrna.

On June 12, 2010, he was also appointed an apostolic administrator of the (Catholic) Apostolic Vicariate of Anatolia after the killing of Bishop Luigi Padovese.

He has never been attacked since he was in Turkey, but in the first months after his arrival in Smyrna, a car hit him as he crossed the road [2] he spent months in the hospital.

On November 7, 2015, Pope Francis accepted his renouncement his role as Bishopas he had reached retirement age limits. He has retained the title of emeritus Archbishop of Smyrna.
