Rubrik

Rubrik is a data management company based in Palo Alto, California, United States founded in December 2014 with offices in Bangalore, India, Lawrence, Kansas[1] and Cork, Ireland.[2] It is valued at over $1 billion USD and has been noted for its rapid growth, and transparent company culture.[3]

Company

The company calls itself a “data management platform.”[4] It provides data management services such as backup and recovery, targeting enterprises that run hybrid cloud environments. Its software can be run on-premises and in the cloud to protect and manage data.[5]

Third-party sources have cited the rise of ransomware and other corporate threats as increasing the total market demand for off-site backup solutions.[6]

IVP led a $180 million USD Series D funding round in May of 2017, at a $1.3 billion USD valuation, bringing the company to at least $292 million USD raised to date.[7][8]

In early 2018, Rubrik purchased Datos.io, another cloud data management company.[9]

Controversies

In March 2018, Dell EMC sued two former employees that currently work for Rubrik, alleging that the employees downloaded Dell EMC trade secrets, solicited former Dell EMC customers, and provided unfair competitive advantages to Rubrik. In 2013, Dell EMC filed similar lawsuits against former employees who joined Pure Storage, claiming that the employees retained confidential information and solicited former customers.[10][11]

Personnel

The company was founded in March 2014 by Bipul Sinha (a partner at Lightspeed Ventures), Arvind Jain (ex-Googler), Soham Mazumdar (ex-Facebook), and Arvind Nithrakashyap (ex-Oracle).[12][13][14]

Bipul Sinha now serves as CEO after stepping down from his role at Lightspeed.[15] He holds several patents for distributed storage technologies.[16][17] He has publicly described inviting all 900+ employees to board meetings as an act of “radical transparency.”[18][3]

The company recently hired Murray Demo, the CFO who took Atlassian public, prompting speculation of a future IPO.[19][20]

Former Microsoft Chairman John Thompson is a board member.[21]

Golden State Warriors basketball player Kevin Durant is a notable investor, citing Rubrik as his first technology investment made with the guidance of noted angel investor Ron Conway.[22][23]
