Father Romano Donatus Bottegal[1] (1921-1978) was a Cistercian Hermit.

Early life

He was born on 28 December 1921 in San Donato di Lamon, Belluno, Italy.

Religious Life

He joined Cistercians Order and entered the abbey of Tre Fontane in 1946 and professed solemn vow in 1951. He was granted a canonical indult Ad ducendam vitam eremiticam for three years in 1964. He was granted an indult of perpetual exclaustration Ad nutum Sanctae Sedis in 1966. He lived as a Hermit From 1969 to 1973 in Israel and Lebanon. He began his life as a recluse in 1976.

Death

He died on 19 February 1978 in Beirut, Lebanon. He is buried at the Cathedral of St Barbara at Baalbeck.

Beatification

He was declared 'Venerable' on 9 December 2013 by Pope Francis for the decree of heroic virtues.[2][3]
