Rokhsana Fiaz is a Labour Party politician serving as Mayor of Newham. Previously elected as a Newham Councillor in 2014, Fiaz was elected in the 2018 election and is the successor to Robin Wales.[1]. She received 73.4% of the first preference votes[2]. She is the first directly elected female mayor for any London borough.[3]. Fiaz has also promised to hold a referendum on the direct elected mayoral system[4].
Personal life
Fiaz was born in Mile End, London to parents who had moved to the UK from Pakistan in the 1960s.[5] In 2009 she was awarded an OBE for services for race, faith and charity.[6]
