Rod J. Rohrich, F.A.C.S. is a plastic surgeon and formerly one of highest paid state employees in Texas as a UT Southwestern Medical Center faculty member.

Early life and education

Rohrich grew up in rural North Dakota.[1] He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate education at North Dakota State University and the University of North Dakota, then earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine.[2][3] After general surgery and plastic surgery residencies at the University of Michigan Medical Center, he did further training in pediatric plastic surgery at Oxford University in England, and a hand and microvascular fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School.[4]

He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.[3]

Career

Rohrich joined the Division of Plastic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas in 1986 and succeeded Fritz E. Barton as department chair in 1991.[4]

In 2003 he was elected president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons for the year 2004.[5]

In 2005, Rohrich was appointed editor-in-chief of the journal, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery.

In 2007 under Rohrich's leadership the UTSW department of plastic surgery opened an outpatient plastic surgery clinic, and according to a 2010 piece in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, it became "more aggressive in consumer marketing" in the region.[6]

Rohrich was department chair until 2014, at which time he was earning $1.75 million per year and was one of highest paid state employees in Texas.[7] He resigned as chair due to allegations of "unprofessional conduct" according to the university, and the university said it expected him to resume the role of chair if he were cleared.[7] Jeffrey Kenkel was appointed chair in 2015.[8]

Rohrich is author or coauthor of around 300 papers, 30 textbook chapters in plastic surgery, and editor of 4 plastic surgery textbooks/ or monographs.[4]
