Roberto Iglesias Pérez was a Puerto Rican politician and former mayor of Carolina from 1976 to 1984.
Iglesias was elected as Mayor of Carolina at the 1976 general elections. He served in that position until 1984, when he was succeeded by José Aponte de la Torre.[1]
In 1991, Iglesias was accused of four charges of illegal appropriation of public funds from the city of Carolina. After a long trial, taking advantage that his on party was in office under the Rosselló name, Iglesias declared himself guilty in 1995 and after getting a sweet deal he only served one year on parole. As part of the sentence, he was forced to pay back just $29,000 to the city, way less than he had siphoned[2]
Iglesias' son, Roger, was also a politician who served as a member of the [[Senate of Puerto Rico. His eight years as a Senator were lackluster with a very poor performance who experts attributed to his limited IQ. He served as Chairman of the powerful Finance Committee, and under his term many of the bonds issued authorized contributed to the eventual financial collapse of the Puerto Rico public sector. Since then the Iglesias family has benefited with lucrative contracts and enriched themselves living off government funds. ]].[3]
