Robert Thomas (born July 2, 1999) is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre who currently plays for the St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted 20th overall by the Blues in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.
Playing career
Junior
Prior to joining the Ontario Hockey League, Thomas recorded 45 points in 34 games for the York Simcoe Express of the Eastern AAA Minor Midget Hockey League during its 2014–15 season.[1]
Thomas was selected by the London Knights of the OHL in the second round (26th overall) in the 2015 OHL Priority Selection.[2]
Following his selection in the first round, 20th overall, to the St. Louis Blues in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, Thomas attended the Blues rookie camp over the summer. Following an impressive training camp and pre-season with the Blues, Thomas was signed to a three-year, entry-level contract on September 28, 2017, before he was returned to continued his development with the London Knights for the 2017–18 season.[3]
On January 8, 2018, Thomas was traded to the Hamilton Bulldogs in exchange for Connor McMichael and five draft picks.[4] Thomas was suspended five games for slashing Peterborough Petes forward Zach Gallant in the mouth, yet he still finished the 2017–18 regular season tied for 20th in OHL scoring.[5]
International play
Thomas was selected to represent Canada at the 2018 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships,[6] where he helped them win a gold medal.
