Robert G. Cassilly (born July 8, 1958) was born in Havre de Grace, Maryland and is a Harford County Republican politician. He has served in the Maryland State Senate since January 2015. He sits on the Judicial Proceedings Committee.[1]

Career

After graduating from Johns Hopkins University, Cassilly joined the United States Army. He served as an officer from 1980-1985. Upon leaving the Army Cassilly began studying law at the University of Baltimore. Graduating with honors, he began practicing law in Harford County in 1988.[2] He practiced for 15 years across the State of Maryland before opening his own law firm, which he has operated for the last 14 years.

Politics

Cassilly has been a part of Harford County politics for nearly two decades. First serving as councilman and then Mayor of his hometown of Bel Air, Maryland. He stepped down from the town council in 2002 to run for a position on the Harford County Council. Cassilly won election to the Harford County Council as the representative from district C, which primarily includes the town of Bel Air.[3] He served in this capacity until being deployed to Iraq as a member of the National Guard in 2006.

In 2014 Cassilly returned to politics. This time running for a seat in the Maryland State Senate. He ran in district 34, which had been vacated by former Senate Minority Leader Nancy Jacobs. He ran unopposed in the Republican primary [4] and went on to defeat his democrat challenge by 14 points in the general election.[5] At the same time his younger brother Andrew, was elected as a State Delegate in district 35B and his older brother, Joeseph, won re-election as Harford County State's Attorney.[6] Both Bob and Andrew have filed to run for re-election in the 2018. Joeseph retired in 2017 after having served as 34 years as Harford County State's Attorney [7]

In addition to his elected positions, Cassilly has been a member of the Harford County Republican Central Committee for many years.

Military Service

During the 8 years between serving as Bel Air Mayor and a Maryland State Senator, Senator Cassilly served in the United States Army, and was deployed for 4 years to Iraq. He was awarded a Bronze star for actions while deployed.
