Richard Shuttleworth (MP for Lancashire)

Forcett Hall, North Yorkshire

Richard Shuttleworth (168322 December 1749) of Gawthorpe Hall, Lancashire and Forcett Hall, Yorkshire was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1705 to 1749.[1]

He was the eldest son of Sir Richard Shuttleworth, M.P., of Gawthorpe Hall and Forcett, whom he succeeded in 1687. The Shuttleworths chose to live at Forcett Hall.

Shuttleworth was returned as Tory MP for Lancashire in 1705 and held the seat until his death. He was Father of the House from 1748. He may have had Jacobite sympathies, and had two relatives who fought in the 1715 rebellion.

He married, in 1703, Emma, the daughter of William Tempest of Old Durham, and had 5 sons and 3 daughters. His son and heir James Shuttleworth became MP for the same constituency.
