Refilwe Mtsweni is the current 5th Premier of Mpumalanga. She previously served as MEC for Co-Operative Governance and Traditional Affairs. She succeeded former Premier, David Mabuza, after he was appointed Deputy President of South Africa.[1]

Premier of Mpumalanga (2018 to present)

In 2017, when Mtsweni served as acting Premier of Mpumalanga, she declared a special provincial funeral for the late Ray Phiri.[2] On 27 February 2018, she was sworn-in as acting Premier by North High court Chief Judge Malesela Legodi at the Nelspruit Magistrate Court. [3] She was sworn-in for a second time as acting Premier on 1 March 2018 in Pretoria.[4] On 14 March 2018, the ANC officially elected Mtsweni to become the premier of Mpumalanga. She served as Premier-elect until the legislature confirmed her position on 20 March 2018. [5] She was officially inaugurated on 20 March 2018. She is the first woman to hold the role. [6]

Executive Council of Refilwe Mtsweni

Controversy

In 2014, the Democratic Alliance provincial leader, Anthony Bernadie, said in a statement that Mtsweni "lacks the skill or strength of character to manage a complex portfolio" after she was appointed MEC for Co-Operative Governance and Traditional Affairs. [7] In 2018, the Provincial Democratic Alliance of Mpumalanga said that the swearing-in of Mtshweni was "unconstitutional", because former premier David Mabuza was not in liberty to appoint an acting Premier in a position he no longer holds.
