Random Recipe is a Canadian musical group founded in 2007 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The band is composed of members Frannie Holder (vocals and guitar), Fab (rap, beatbox, steeldrum), Vincent Legault (guitar and keys), and Liu-Kong Ha (percussion and keys).[1] Although the band performs and records primarily in English, many of their songs contain Spanish and Italian lyrics.[2] In 2008, they were hailed by Spin Magazine as one of the top 5 up-and-coming Montreal bands.[3]

History

Frannie and Fab met in 2005 while both students at university, studying political science at McGill University and translation at Concordia University, respectively.[4] Their first public performances were free-of-charge and spontaneous, including busking in parks, in taxis, and on the Montreal metro. They have continued to put on impromptu shows at poutineries and pizzerias.[5] Their sound has been described as eclectic yet accessible; a mix between CocoRosie and the Beastie Boys.[6] Vincent Legault, who studied percussion and guitar jazz at McGill University and Liu-Kong Ha who studied at the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec à Montréal[7]) later joined the band, rounding out the group's sound to include instruments as diverse as the xylophone, melodica, omnichord, steel drums, and kazoo.[8] In February 2014, the band announced the addition of a fifth member (hired as a musician on big tours), Florent Legault, also revealing that Frannie and Fab were once romantically linked, but have long since ended their relationship, remaining close friends.[9]

Touring

The quartet have toured throughout Quebec and the rest of Canada, as well as in the United States, France, Italy, Belgium and Iceland. They have also performed several times at the Montreal International Jazz Festival and the Festival d'été de Québec (2010 and 2011), as well as at M for Montreal (2010 and 2011), and the Halifax Pop Explosion (2010).[10] In July 2011, Random Recipe participated in the Canada Day Celebrations on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, performing to an audience that included William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.[11] They have played at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, twice, first in 2011, then in 2014.[12]

Accomplishments

Random Recipe has also been awarded several prizes for their performances, including the 2011 Mirroir prize for Best Canadian Artist and RIDEAU's 2011 Étoiles Galaxie prize. Following the release of Fold It! Mold It! in September 2010 (released in Canada through Bonsound and in January 2012 in France via Chapter Two Records), the band was nominated in three categories at the 2011 ADISQ (Album of the year - Anglophone, Quebec artist of the year - Other languages, and Album artwork of the year). Since then, Random Recipe has multiplied collaborations with widely known artists such as Pierre Lapointe, Alex Nevsky, DJ Champion and Jérôme Minière.[13] In 2009 they received the award for best new group by the Montreal International Music Initiative (MIMI).[14]

Discography

Random Recipe have released four full-length albums, the first three through Bonsound Records and their most recent album independently.[15]
