Rain Dove Dubilewski (born September 27, 1989) is an American model, actor, and activist. Dove, who prefers non-gendered pronouns,[3] is best known for their work in subversive fashion, posing as male and female models in photoshoots, productions and runway shows. Dove has been voted as SheWired's Most Eligible Bachelorette in 2014[4] and named one of Elle Magazine's 12 Women Who Are Redefining Beauty in 2015.[5]

Early life and education

Born a female, Dove lived their early years believing they were ugly: they had a larger physique than other children in their class, which earned them the name, "Tranny Danny".[6] Dove began studying genetic engineering and civil law at University of California, Berkeley.[6] It was at this time that they began dressing as a man (they thought they already looked like one) and found that people treated them quite differently than when dressed as a woman. It was during this time that Dove entered the Colorado Firefighters, with a male pseudonym, and lived a year as such; they said in an interview, "The male firefighters asked me to rate the women with them. I realised very quickly that I didn't want to be the ugly woman in a room full of men so I went along with being a man for the next 11 months."[7]

Modeling career

Dove began a modeling career as a joke. They were challenged by a friend to present themselves as a man in a Calvin Klein casting for underwear. After doing so, and at the casting, they were handed the outfit for the test shoot, which was just a pair of underwear. They came in topless, to which the designer responded by giving Dove a men's shirt and saying "Swear to God, you will not tell anyone you're a woman!"[8] It was after this show and through contacts people began seeking Dove for modeling jobs; three months later they accepted their first modelling job and have since walked at New York fashion week on both men's and women's runways.[9]

Activism

During their final year in high school, Dove intentionally became homeless as a social experiment to "document how homelessness affected my academics".[10] It was after this event that Dove became more involved in activism and politics: they reported on being interested in working for the United Nations prior to a career in fashion: "I wanted to work for the U.N. (United Nations) ... I would have applied at the U.N. and would have probably been working in some third world country, or a country that has water rights issues. Gender would be the least of my worries."[11]

Dove supported the defunct movement that opposed North Carolina's Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, which stated individuals should use the restrooms that correspond with their gender assigned at birth.[10] Dove is dubbed as a "gender capitalist", which they explain as "Gender Capitalism is both Feminist and Masculinist. It's everythingist. It's the recognition that I, as an organism, am treated differently based on my perceived genitalia and the identity surrounding that relationship."[10]

Regarding the fashion industry and gender issues, Dove states that advertising agencies "aren't some evil illuminati trying to dupe the people into living heteronormative white lifestyles" and that they are simply "trying to make money in the safest way possible."[12] Such is the case with the Queer Fashion Week, of which Dove said, "When you have an event like this, you are telling the large conglomerates like Gap, Levi's, H & M etcetera that there is money to be made and there is a desire to represent the queer community in the commercial side of the fashion world. They don't have to be afraid to align themselves with the LGBTQ community."[11]

A new clothing line by the name Phluid Project caught Dove's attention and got support for being the first major non-binary clothing store in New York, and they participated in a panel as moderator.[13]

Personal life

Dove resides in New York City, sharing an apartment with fellow model Cory Wade. Dove has been in a relationship with actress Rose McGowan since July 2018.[14]
