Rade Krunić (Bosnian pronunciation: [râːde krǔːnitɕ]; born 7 October 1993) is a Bosnian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Serie A club Empoli and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.

Krunić started his professional career at Sutjeska Foča, before going to Serbia, where he played for Donji Srem and Borac Čačak. In 2015 he moved to Empoli.

A former youth international for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Krunić made his senior international debut in 2016.

Club career

Early career

Born in Foča, Krunić started his career with the local club Sutjeska Foča, for whom he made his professional debut.[2] Next stop in his career was Serbian side Donji Srem.[3]

In August 2014 he was transferred to Hellas Verona, but was immediately sent back on a six-month loan to Donji Srem.[4] When Hellas Verona began its off-season winter training in January 2015, Krunić did not show up and the club had no idea of his whereabouts, after which they threatened to register a complaint with UEFA and FIFA.[5] Donji Srem, the team to which Krunić was loaned from Verona, paid a compensation fee for Krunić's absence.[6]

During January 2015, Krunić came close to signing with Red Star Belgrade, but the transfer fell through. Krunić claimed that agent Stevan Stojanović (former Red Star goalkeeper) stopped the transfer for his own interests, indicating that Red Star was offering a less desirable percentage of the transfer to him.[7] On 30 January 2015, it was announced that Krunić joined Borac Čačak.[8] After Krunić's promotion, his former club Donji Srem filed a complaint to the Football Association of Serbia, and criticized the Association for pressuring them to break FIFA rules in regards to Verona's legal grievances about Krunić.[6]

Empoli

On 30 June 2015, Krunić signed a three-year contract with Italian club Empoli.[9] He debuted in Serie A against Sassuolo on 4 October 2015,[10] and scored his first goal later that month, in a 2–0 triumph against Genoa.[11]

In October 2017, Krunić prolonged his contract until June 2021.[12] In that season, he played a big part in Empoli's promotion just one season after being relegated, as they were crowned Serie B champions on 28 April 2018.[13] Krunić was also named in the best team of the league for the season, with an impact of 5 goals and 10 assists.[14]

In his first game back in Italian top flight football, Krunić opened the scoring in a comfortable win against Cagliari.[15]

International career

Krunić was a regular member of Bosnia and Herzegovina under-21 selection under coach Vlado Jagodić.[16]

On 3 November 2015, he received his first call-up to the senior side by Mehmed Baždarević, for the UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying play-offs against Republic of Ireland.[17] Krunić debuted for Bosnia and Herzegovina in a friendly game against Denmark on 3 June 2016.[18]
