Queenswood Heights

Queenswood Heights is a neighbourhood located in Orleans, a suburb in the east end of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Prior to amalgamation in 2001, the neighbourhood was in the Township of Cumberland. Queenswood Heights is bounded by St. Joseph Boulevard to the north, Tenth Line Road to the east, Innes Road to the south, and the former Cumberland-Gloucester boundary to the west (the Queenswood Heights Community Association considers "Duford St" (sic) to be the western boundary.[1] According to the Canada 2011 Census, the population of the neighbourhood was 11,684.

The neighbourhood was established in 1962[2] and was the first modern subdivision created in the area.

Schools

There are four elementary level schools serving the needs of young students in the neighbourhood.

  • Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School - English Catholic elementary School
  • École élémentaire catholique Reine-des-Bois - Catholic French language elementary school
  • Dunning-Foubert Elementary School - English public elementary school
  • La Source - French language public elementary school
  • Queenswood Public School.

Queenswood Public was one of the oldest schools in the neighbourhood, it was closed in June 2008 due to low enrollment and rising costs. Students were transferred to nearby Dunning-Foubert.[3]

Shopping

There is a small strip mall at the corner of des Épinettes and Prestwick which includes:

  • Quickie Convenience Store
  • Canada Post counter (located inside the Quickie).
  • Mama Rosa`s Pizza
  • Mobile Plus
  • Expressions Hair Design

There is also a small strip mall located at the corner of Tompkins Ave & 10th Line Rd which includes:

  • Mac`s Convenience Store
  • Top of the Hill Bakery
  • M&M Meat Shops
  • Milano Pizzeria

Parks

  • Ravine Park (Duford Drive)

Facilities: Soccer field; softball and T ball diamonds; nature trails; adjacent to Reine des Bois school which has playground equipment and fitness stations

  • Kinsella Park (Prestwick Drive)

Facilities: Field house; 4 lit Plexipave Tennis Courts; 2 outdoor rinks one lit Hockey/multipurpose area; one lit pleasure rink/adult ball diamond area; Playground equipment and soccer field at adjacent schools (Dunning Foubert and Our Lady of Wisdom); tball diamond; soccer field; toboggan hill

  • Queenswood Ridge Park (Kennedy Lane East and Tompkins )

Facilities: Field house; 2 lit outdoor rinks one hockey/multipurpose area, one pleasure/water play area; Playground and fenced Tot lot; lit ad ult ball diamond; full size soccer field; toboggan hill; jogging track

  • Yves Richer Park (Des Epinettes Avenue)

Facilities: Little League Baseball diamond: fenced tot lot/playground equipment; nature trails

  • Cardinal Farms Park (Des Epinettes and Wildflower)

Facilities: soccer field; fenced tot lot and playground equipment; jogging track; nature trails

  • Mayfair Park (Roxdale Avenue & Prestwick Drive)

Facilities: Pocket park

Nature Trails

In 1980 the Queenswood Heights Recreation Association formed a separate sub-committee to develop a system of trails in the Cumberland Bilberry Creek ravine area. With the rapid development of Queenswood Heights and later the Fallingbrook area the trails were extended along the escarpment south of St. Joseph Blvd. and along the river in Chatelaine Village.

Currently there are 5.5km of trails weaving their way through Queenswood Heights, these trails include a ravine, foot bridges, benches, etc.
