Pyaterochka

Pyaterochka (Russian: Пятёрочка) is a Russian chain of proximity stores managed by X5 Retail Group. The brand is one of the most popular discount supermarket chains in Russia.

In April 2018, the chain opened its 12,000th store in the city of St. Petersburg.

History

The chain’s first store opened in Saint Petersburg in 1999. In 2001, Pyaterochka expanded to Moscow, before embarking on its franchising programme in 2002.

In 2005, Pyaterochka Holding N.V. completed an IPO on the London Stock Exchange.

In 2006, Pyaterochka and Perekrestok merged, creating X5 Retail Group while keeping the Pyaterochka brand unchanged[1].

In 2009, X5 Retail Group acquired Kopeyka, a retail chain with 660+ stores and 7 (seven) distribution centres[2][3][4]. All Kopeyka stores were rebranded to Pyaterochka.

In 2013, Pyaterochka launched a store refurbishment programme. The fresh selection of its product range was expanded and a more spacious layout was introduced; glass-fronted design for most of the stores was introduced. The Pyaterochka concept of brand discount stores is the core format for X5, followed by the supermarket chain Perekrestok.[5]

IT and innovations

In spring 2017, Pyaterochka started automating its recruitment efforts. An automated system (Robot Vera with a female voice and Robot Yermil with a male one) uses speech recognition, searches for CVs based on a predetermined set of parameters, and calls candidates to invite them to apply for positions available at the company. Interested candidates are then transferred by the robot to a recruitment specialist[14][15].

In February 2018, X5 launched an online service that helps real estate owners to calculate the average rent at any location where Pyaterochka has a presence. The service also enables landlords to offer premises or a property for lease or sale instantly, if the property meets all the criteria for store opening, or offer a land plot for building a store [16].

Logistics

As at 31 December 2017 Pyaterochka operated 39 distribution centres[13].

Interesting Facts

In February 2005, Pyaterochka purchased the rights to Nu Pogodi! (Well, Just You Wait!), a popular Russian animated series - and even created two new episodes, No. 19 in 2005 and No. 20 in 2006, directed by Aleksey Kotyonochkin, son of the famous animator Vyacheslav Kotyonochkin[17].

In January 2013, X5 signed a licence agreement with the Organising Committee for Sochi 2014, establishing the company as the official retail partner of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Under the agreement, around 1,000 licensed Olympic souvenirs were available from all Pyaterochka stores in 45 Russian regions[18].
