Puthan Panam (English:New Money) is a 2017 Indian Malayalam film written, directed and co-produced by Ranjith, based on the issue of black money and demonetisation. It stars Mammootty, Baiju, Mamukkoya, Hareesh Perumanna, Nirmal Palazhi and Swaraj Gramika in prominent roles.

The film follows the series of incidents that happened in Mangalore-based underworld don Nithyananda Shenoy (Mammootty)'s life, following the announcement of 2016 Indian banknote demonetisation on November 8. Mammootty speaks Kasargode dialects in the movie. The film was released on 12 April 2017.[1][2][3]

Plot

Nithyananda Shenoy (Mammootty), a don from Kasaragod takes revenge against an ex-minister who swindles him on the hours before sudden demonetisation is made known to public. In the sideline at the underbelly of Kochi survival story of Muthuvel (Swaraj Gramika) and his mother Sundari (Iniya) is shown.

A film with Mammootty and Ranjith uniting again was first reported in late April 2016. [4] By early September, it was reported that the film was titled as Vamban and would start filming in the end of October.[5][6] Ranjith agreed the news that the duo (Mammootty and him) were joining, but he said the title was not confirmed and that the film would be different from their previous ventures, without divulging much more.[7]

In mid-November, the title was revealed as Puthan Panam, with its subject reported to be of black money and a cast including Iniya, Renji Panicker, Sai Kumar and Siddique.[8] A tagline, 'The New Indian Rupee', is suffixed to the title, coinciding with the situation when the ₹1000 and ₹500 banknotes were demonetised in India by the Central Government. Ranjith had made a film in 2011 with the title Indian Rupee, which also discussed about the counterfeit currency notes and black money issues.[9] It was clarified that Puthan Panam would not be its sequel.[10][11]

The principal photography was begun on 25 November 2016, with Mammootty appearing in a new look featuring a thick moustache, after finishing his commitments in the film The Great Father.[12] Mammootty's character was revealed as Nithyananda Shenoy, with reports suggesting a middle-aged man who hails from Kumbala, Kasargode,[13] and he would speak Kasargode dialect.[14] Mammootty trained in Kasargode accent with the guidance of dialogue writer P. V. Shajikumar, who is also a screen writer.[15] Ranjith called Shajikumar for writing dialogues in Puthan Panam as per the suggestion of Mammootty. Mammootty found Kumar on a Whatsapp group named 'Njatuvela' where both were members. When Shajikumar translated a poem, "Apolitical Intellectuals" by Otto René Castillo, in Kasargode dialect and posted on the group, Mammootty was impressed in it, and sang the Kasargode version of the poem at the anniversary function of the group. He also noted the translator and suggested his name when the film with Kasargode as background was planned. According to Shajikumar, Kasargode dialect is used to be mocked by the outsiders due to its incomprehensibility. But during the three months-long period of shooting and dubbing, Mammootty never made fun of the slang but listened the unpronounceable words and phrases carefully and understood the meaning.[16] Swaraj Gramika, a child artiste from a Thiruvananthapuram-based theatre group, who played a prominent role in the film, was selected after a casual meet with Ranjith in Kozhikode, whome he had earlier sent the details of his two short films and theatre productions.[17]

In December 2016, composer Shaan Rahman announced that he was chosen to compose the soundtrack for Puthan Panam.[13] Filming took place in Cochin, Calicut, Goa and Pollachi.[18]

Reception

Critical

Deepa Soman of The Times of India rated the film three out five and concluded, "If you go expecting to watch a wholesome film on the black money issue, you might not get your money's worth from this flick. But if all that you care about is to stay entertained through the length of the film, it is worth your ‘Puthan Panam’".[19] Though appreciating Mammootty's characterisation saying, "You feel sorry for Mammootty, who plays his character with total dedication. He looks convincing and is his makeover is just brilliant," Moviebuzz of Sify stated, "Puthan Panam is lazily done and besides some casual references here and there, the connection with the demonetization drive is barely impressive. In short, after a good start, this one goes awry. Sad!"[20]
