The Pueblo Viejo mine is a gold mine located in the north-central region of the Dominican Republic in the Sánchez Ramírez Province.[1] It is the largest gold mine in the Americas and second largest in the world.[1][2][3] It is also the first exploited mine by the Spaniards in America.[4] The mine has estimated reserves of 25.3 million oz of gold and 120 million oz of silver.[1] Barrick Gold Corporation owns 60% of the mine and Goldcorp Inc. owns 40%.[5] It was formerly operated by the Dominican mining group Rosario Dominicana, S. A., which had exploited Pueblo Viejo from 1975 to 1999 when it went bankrupt.

Gold is recovered from the ore using a pressure oxidation process, performed in four autoclaves which operate at 3.45 MPa and 230 °C.[1]
