Protosalanx hyalocranius
Example of a Chinese clearhead icefish, Protosalanx hyalocranius. Taken from the paper announcing the publication of its genome.

Protosalanx is a small genus of icefishes native to Asia. The name is derived from proto (Greek proto = first) and the latinization of salamga, Filipino for a kind of swallow. They are commercially fished and used for aquaculture in China.[1]

Species

There are currently two recognized species in this genus:[2]

  • Protosalanx chinensis (Basilewsky, 1855)
  • Protosalanx hyalocranius (J. F. Abbott, 1901) (Clearhead icefish)
