Propellerfrau is a painting by Sigmar Polke, which was completed in 1969.[1][2][3]

History

The painting was designed and created by Polke in 1969. It was first exhibited in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1992.[4] In 2007, the painting was sold by Polke to a friendly art director from Cologne, which led later to a medially very widely discussed ownership lawsuit between the bereaved of Polke (he died in 2010) and the buyer. The Landgericht Köln (high court in Cologne) obliged the heirs 2014 to return the work to the buyer.[5][6][7] In 2018, the painting was taken in an art collection of a museum in Rorschacherberg.[8][9]

Characteristics of the painting

The painting was realized by Polke with oil on curtain fabric. It shows his interpretation of the Space Race in the 1960s between the Soviet Union and the United States.[10]
