Prince George's Community Federal Credit Union

Prince George's Community Federal Credit Union (or PGCFCU) is a full-service financial institution headquartered in Prince George’s County Maryland. Previously known as Prince George’s Employees Federal Credit Union, the organization was founded in 1967. From that time the credit union has grown tremendously. It now operates with four branches throughout the county with more than 16,000 members and assets above $170 million.

History

  • In 1967, the organization was founded to serve county employees.
  • In 1975, credit union assets reached $1.5 million.
  • In 1987, ATM cards were introduced to make banking more convenient for the members.
  • In 1994, the first branch opened in Largo, MD
  • In 1999, PGCFCU assets climbed to $100 million
  • In 2010, the organization expanded its charter to serve anyone who lives, works, worships or volunteers in Prince George’s County, Maryland and changed its name to Prince George’s Community Federal Credit Union.
  • In 2011, opened its headquarters in Bowie, MD.
  • In 2018, credit union assets increased to $170 million. Membership stands over 16,000 members.

Membership Eligibility

Prince George’s Community Federal Credit Union field of membership is set by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). As with all credit unions, membership with the organization is based on a common bond. Membership with Prince George’s Community Federal Credit Union includes anyone who lives, works, worships or volunteers in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The organization partners with a number of government agencies and private companies throughout the county to offer membership through their new hire orientation and employee benefit programs. Throughout the year Prince George’s Community Federal Credit Union hosts a number of programs to facilitate their mission of empowering Members with financial information and resources.

Examples include:

  • Financial Wellness for Women Series – Event held in October with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with the help of community partners, involving seminars that help to improve and maintain financial growth for women in the community. 
  • Lunch and Learn Webinars – Online series held monthly that covers financial topics focused on credit/budget management, home buying, college planning and more. Members can conveniently access the information right from their computer or mobile device.
  • Prison Financial Education – Financial education seminars focused on budgeting conducted to help inmates achieve a successful transition to a normal life.
  • Business Roadmap Seminars – Yearlong series open to business owners. Participants can gain insight from industry experts and create or enhance their business plan to improve the success of their business.

Community Involvement

Community involvement has always been a defining part of the credit union’s core mission of “people helping people.” Prince George’s Community Federal Credit Union is no different. We greatly support our neighbors throughout the county with events such as:

Examples include:

  • ECO Community Day –This event invites the public to come out to enjoy games, food, and fun, while learning more about the products and services that the organization has to offer.
  • Shred-It Days- With the overall rise in identity theft worldwide, this event encourages Members to bring their documents to get professionally shredded with our onsite shredding service.
  • Toys for Tots - During the holiday season Prince George’s Community Federal Credit Union collects new and unwrapped toys to give to less fortunate children in the Prince George’s community.
  • National Night Out – Each August the organization partners with local police stations in helping citizens keep their communities safe. At the event they speak with attendees on how to prevent identity theft and how to navigate the process if they become victims.
