The Sultan of the Sultanate of Oman is the monarch and head of state of Oman. It is the most powerful position in the country. The sultans of Oman are members of the Al Said dynasty, which is the ruling family of Oman since the mid-18th century.

Since 23 July 1970, Qaboos bin Said al Said is the current sultan.

Succession

In Oman, the eldest son of the reigning Sultan succeeds to the throne on his death. In the absence of a male heir, the reigning Sultan may nominate a brother or other male relative from amongst the descendants of Sultan Said bin Sultan. The current Sultan Qaboos of Oman has neither confirmed or denied any children^[31] and has indicated that once he is dead it will be up to the Royal family to meet and agree on a candidate, although there is wide spread rumour that a private indication may already have been given.^[32] However, if the royal family cannot agree on a candidate, then the Defence Council will decide, based on the two names Sultan Qaboos placed in sealed envelopes prior to his death.

There is currently much speculation around the names in those two envelopes, with professors, government officials and experts heavily suggesting the two names; HH Sayyid Thaimour al-Said and HH Sheikh Shamsaldin Qais Sulayman al-Said being the two most probable names according to those close to the palace. Including outspoken support for the pair from the UAE and Saudi Arabia.^{[33][34][35][36]}
