Preap Sovath (born 1975) is a Cambodian singer.

Early life

Sovath was born in 1975 during the evacuation of citizens by the Khmer Rouge Army of the Pol Pot Regime (1975-1979). His mother delivered him at nighttime under a tree; therefore, he was named after that tree. After that night, Sovath’s mother had to continue walking with other villagers to Trapang Sla for three days. Sovath’s father was killed by the Khmer Rouge Army in 1977. Later, Sovath and his mother moved to live in the Kaoh Thum District (Kandal Province). His mother went to work at the collective farms every day while he grew up in a child center.

In 1982, Sovath and his mother moved to live in Phnom Penh. At first, they lived on the street. His mother then became a soldier and continued to study. She worked very hard to send him to school and he eventually graduated from high school in 1991 and continued to study Bachelor of Law and Economic at the University of Economic.

Career

Sovath's career as a singer started in the 1990s. He released his first song in the early '90s with female singer Touch Sreynich. In 1992, he became a soldier at the Political Commissioner. He worked during the daytime and sang at a restaurant and bar at nighttime. In 1997, he became a singer for Raksmey Hang Meas Production. Initially, he did not want to be a famous singer but liked to sing.[1]

Sovath's work is well known in Cambodian communities abroad.

Performances

Sovath has performed at the Best of the Best: Live Concert, a concert which has taken place annually since 2004 at Phnom Penh Olympic Stadium and has included performances by Cambodian singers such as Raksmey Hang Meas. The concert is free to the public; DVD sales cover the costs. He performed at Best of the Best 2012 on 14 February 2012 at Koh Pich's Concert Hall.

Sovath took part in the MTV EXIT Concert in Phnom Penh on December 12, 2008. The concert was part of a campaign to raise awareness to end exploitation and human trafficking in Asia.
