History

Pinnawala Central College was established in 1882 as the 'Government Boys' School' on 0.5 ha (1.2 acres) of land[2] with 45 students and 6 teachers in one building in 1870. Mr. Brampisingo was the first principal in 1920. There were classes from grade 1 – 5 at time as a junior school and in 1956 it became a mixed school. An immense contribution was offered by the most famous philanthropist and one of the late ministers of postal N. H. Keerthiratne and S. A. Lokubandara Bentota as the principal to bring it up to Mahavidyala. In 1963 the opportunity was obtained to follow the Advanced Level Examination in Arts stream and increased the classes from grade 1-12 and laid the path for more number of students to learn at the school.

Students were allowed to follow the Advance Level in the science stream in 1964. The opportunity was provided to follow the A/L in the commerce stream; in 1969 it was a great pride that it made the way to become a national school on 12 September 1995.

By letting the students follow free education at the same time for the betterment of the students' welfare the school was growing. Facilities got the chance to open two double floor buildings as male and female hostels. At the beginning there was only ¼ of acres of land and now it is expanded to 6 acres of land. Though it was started with one building now there are 45 buildings and it depicts the development of the school today. A vast development is completed with a large playground, a library, an audio-visual unit laboratory, for G.C.E. O/L, Information Technological unit, Home Science unit, Agriculture unit, Aesthetic unit, Scouts troop and Environmental unit.
