Pinegrove is an American band from Montclair, New Jersey, United States.[2] The band name is an allusion to the Brown Family Environmental Center at Kenyon College, where lyricist Evan Stephens Hall and keyboardist Nandi Plunkett attended.[3]

History

Formation (2010–2014)

Both Montclair natives, Evan Stephens Hall (vocals, guitar) and Zack Levine (vocals, drums) began playing music together when they were seven years old.[4] They first formed a band in sixth grade, known as The Pug Fuglies, but reached little to no success. In seventh grade, they reformed as Dogwater, and the band continued until they graduated from high school.[5] They played many shows at Montclair’s Serendipity Cafe growing up, and have expressed the positive impact playing their music in a welcoming and encouraging space has had on them.[6] Before graduating from high school, Hall and Levine knew they would like to pursue music together after they graduated from their respective colleges. Hall and Levine are considered the “core” members of Pinegrove.[7] Zack Levine’s younger sibling, Nick Levine (guitar), also helped form Pinegrove, although they no longer play in the band.[8] Sam Skinner (guitar) and Adan Carlo Feliciano (bass) are also from Montclair.[9][10] Hall and Nandi Rose Plunkett (vocals, percussion, keyboard) met in college.[9] As the only woman in the band, Plunkett has confronted and spoken about the sexism she endures in the music industry.[11] Plunkett also leads her own music project under the band Half Waif, which Zack Levine and Adan Carlo also play in as well.[12]

In February 2012, Pinegrove released their debut album, titled Meridian.[13] They released their second EP in July 2013 titled &.[14] In June 2014, Pinegrove released their third EP, titled Mixtape Two.[15] In 2014, Pinegrove re-recorded their song "Problems" for Topshelf Records' 2014 digital sampler.[2]

Breakthrough (2015–2017)

In early 2015, Pinegrove released a compilation cassette titled Everything So Far. In October 2015, Pinegrove signed to Run for Cover Records. After signing to the label, they re-issued their compilation cassette, adding two new songs called "New Friends" and "Angelina".[16][17][18][19]

In May 2016, Pinegrove released the recordings from their live sessions with Audiotree via Bandcamp.[20] The performance is a compilation of songs ranging all across their discography. In January 2016, Pinegrove announced their debut album on Run for Cover titled Cardinal, which was released on February 12, 2016.[21][22] In January 2017, Pinegrove released the album Elsewhere, a compilation of live recordings from their 2016 US tour. The band said the album is "intended as a thank you letter to everybody who supported us in any way."

In July 2017, Pinegrove started to release a series of web videos giving insight into their work and progress recording their upcoming as of yet untitled new album. The series is entitled 'Command + S'. The band began a North American Fall Tour in September 2017. On September 22 at their stop in Toronto, during the concert Evan announced that recording of the new album was completed. He stated a release date of March 2, 2018. According to his report the album would be entitled 'Skylight.'

Nandi Plunkett left the band in October 2017 in order to focus on her solo project Half Waif.[23]

Hiatus (2017–present)

On November 21, 2017, Hall posted a lengthy statement on the band's Facebook page in which he described and responded to an allegation of "sexual coercion" from an unnamed woman. The band canceled a U.S. tour set for that December,[24] and further canceled tour dates overseas in the new year, which were set for March. The group announced they were "continuing their hiatus and taking an extended period of time off the road."[25]

According to former member Nandi Plunkett, Pinegrove plans to release their third album Skylight some time in 2018, but are "Trying to find the best way to re-emerge in a way that feels respectful to everyone involved in the situation" in light of the allegation made against Hall.[23] Pinegrove later clarified that the album was indeed finished, but do not plan to release it until the situation had been resolved.[26]

On April 20, 2018, Spin published an article about this situation titled "Punk Talks Controversy: Pinegrove, a Mishandled Allegation, and Finding a Path Forward." [27]

On 26 September 2018, Pinegrove announced that they would self release Skylight two days later on 28 September.[28]
