Phra Chuthathut Palace

The Phra Chuthathut Palace (Thai: พระจุฑาธุชราชฐาน Phra Chuthathut Ratchathan) or Sichang Palace (พระราชวังสีชัง Phra Ratcha Wang Sichang) is a summer royal residence during the reign of King Chulalongkorn on the islands of Ko Sichang District, Chonburi Province. After the French occupied the island during a conflict with Thailand over control of neighboring Laos in 1893 the royal residence was abandoned. In present day Chulalongkorn University use the palace and area for Sichang Marine Science Research and Training Station and museum of Chulalongkorn University.[1][2]

In 1888 Queen Saovabha Phongsri and Crown Prince Vajiravudh was sick and get the advice from the royal doctor to stay at Koh Sichang until the symptoms go away. In addition, Koh Sichang is the recuperation place of Prince Asdang Dejavudh during his illness. Later in 1889, King Chulalongkorn built a nursing home for patients 3 building and give the name "Vadhana Building" named after Queen Savang Vadhana, "Phongsri Building" named after Queen Saovabha Phongsri and "Apirom Building" named after Princess Saisavali Bhiromya. In 1892, King Chulalongkorn was rest at Koh Si Chang at that time Queen Saovabha Phongsri was enceinte so the king built a summer palace and named "Phra Chuthathut Palace" after his son, Prince Chudadhuj Dharadilok who was born on this island.[3] The palace composed of 4 throne hall and 14 royal houses.

The royal residence was abandoned in 1893 after the French occupied the island during a conflict with Thailand over control of neighboring Laos in Franco-Siamese War. In 1900 the palace was torn down and reassembled in Bangkok, where it is now named Vimanmek Mansion.[4]

Phra Chuthathut Palace is the only royal palace in Thailand, with its location on the island.[5]

Museum

In 2002 Chulalongkorn University started a renovation to exhibit as a museum of historic sites and historical attractions. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously presided over the official opening ceremony of Phra Chuthathut Palace Museum on January 12, 2004.[6]

The section has been renovated and exhibited as a museum and archaeological site are:

  • Pagoda of Wat Atsadang Nimit, It was built in 1892 and is now restored and open to visit.
  • Sea View Building, It was restored and use as a place for interesting exhibits in Koh Sichang.
  • Vadhana Building, It is a place to exhibit important events in Koh Sichang.
  • Phongsri Building, It used as a royal exhibition venue and history of the person who played a role for Koh Sichang in the past.
  • Apirom Building, It used as a building exhibition venue.
