Phiroj Shyangden (Nepali:फिरोज स्याङ्देन,  Phiroj Shyangden) is a Nepali singer, guitarist, composer, songwriter, founding member and former lead singer and guitarist of the Nepali Band 1974 AD[1][2] and The Original Duo.

Early life

Phiroj Shyangden was born to parents Kharkey Shyangden (father) and Late Narbada Shyangden (mother) in Takvar Tea Estate, Darjeeling, India. He went to Betten High School in Tukvar, Darjeeling and completed his college degree form Darjeeling Government College, North Bengal University, India in 1986. Shyangden is a self taught vocalist and studied western classical music (guitar) from Mr. Jeeven Pradhan (Darjeeling Melody Academy), a noted music teacher from Darjeeling. Shyangden moved to Kathmandu in 1990 where he worked as a music teacher in Gyanodaya School, Lalitpur.[3]

Musical career

Phiroj, along with Nirakar Yakthumba (bass guitar) and Bhanu Ahamed (drums) formed 1974 AD in the year 1994 whilst they were teachers in Gyanodaya School in Lalitpur, Kathmandu.[4] During this period Phiroj did most of the writing and compositions for the band. Initially the band played western rock music and covered Bryan Adams, Deep Purple and various other rock acts.[5]

Phiroj left 1974 AD in 2008 amicably to pursue a solo career [6] and moved to New York in 2009.[7][8][9] He released a self-titled studio solo album called 'Phiroj Shyangden' followed by 'Zindagi Asal Cha'.[10][11]

The Original Duo

In 2016 Phiroj and Adrian Pradhan (former 1974 AD) reunited once again under the name 'The Original Duo'.[12][13] They toured five states in USA in 2016, Nepal, UK, Australia in 2017-18[14][15] and will extend the tour to Hong Kong, Dubai and Abu Dhabi.[16]
